What are the features of coercive power?
  • Coercive power is based on fear (of being hurt, poorly treated, or dismissed).
  • The leader uses fear to subdue the subordinates.
  • The leader threatens subordinates that they could be sacked, demoted, or will be awarded poor rating in performance review, having some privileges removed.
  • The subordinates are compelled to cooperate with the leader for fear of being punished.
  • Followers fear that failure to comply will lead to punishment.
