Legitimate power

What are the features of legitimate power?
  • Legitimate, or positional, power is based on the position, office, or title held by the leader.
  • Every organization or institution is run based on rules, regulations and formalized procedures, which form the basis of legitimate power for people holding certain offices.
  • The higher the position or status, the more compliance the leader is able to get from the followers.
  • This power comes when subordinates recognize the authority bestowed on the holder of the office.
  • A leader with legitimate power gets the compliance of others because they feel that this person has this right, by virtue of position.
